How to import a liturgical calendar into iCal, Google Calendars, etc; and a downloadable version for the Macintosh.

Universalis can now generate a liturgical calendar in the vCalendar format, which can be imported into most calendaring applications. We have tested this with iCal and Google Calendars, and it will probably work with Outlook as well.

To try this out, go to the Calendar page in Universalis and scroll to the bottom of the page. The address of the Calendar page is http://www.universalis.com/calendar.htm. Make sure that the local calendar being displayed is the one you want.

You can click on the link marked "Download in vCalendar/iCal format" to download the calendar, and you can then import it into your application. The calendar lists feasts for a whole year starting from today, so you'll have to repeat the download process once a year.

Some applications can accept subscriptions to calendars that are located on web pages: often, they revisit the web page regularly to keep themselves updated, which saves you the effort of an annual download. To get the web address that you should use with your application, right-click on the same "Download in vCalendar/iCal format" link, and select your browser's "Copy Link Location" option from the pop-up menu: this will copy the address to the Clipboard and you can then paste it into your application.

If you have a Macintosh and you're interested in trying out the stand-alone downloadable version of Universalis, please visit http://www.universalis.com/n-download-mac.htm and download it from there. Like all the downloadable versions, this has a limited trial period and after that you'll have to buy a registration code if you want to see the readings (although the calendar display works for ever without needing a code). The trial period is at least a month. If you already have a Universalis registration code then you don't need to buy a new one because your existing registration code will work.

The Mac version is a Universal application. It works on Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard). It doesn't have a help file yet (there will be one in due course) but is otherwise complete. Our thanks to the people who helped us by testing it.
